Introduction to Fred Kwon

My name is Hyoshin, but everyone call me Fred.

My major is chemistry professional. In the future, you will see me teaching chemistry to college students.

My favorite class of last year was CHEM 4444 with Dr. Glazthofer. This class deals with a lot of graphs. Main goal of this class is to identify the unknown chemicals, so if you are interested in chemistry, this could be the class that you might love.

My biggest accomplishment of last semester was getting A in that class. Although it is a fun class, it is a challenging class also.

During the winter break, I went to Dallas, Texas to watch some interesting shows and museums.

My favorite book and movie is "The Lord of the Rings." For recent movie, I really enjoyed "The Revenant" that came out not too long ago.

For music, I do not have any favorite type of music. I just listen to what is on radio.

I have a dream of being a successful student in short term, of being a successful professor or chemist in long term, and of being a great father for my children and a sweet husband to my wife.

(Mr.Kwon and Mrs. Kwon)

I have a dog.
(Picture of my dog, Sephy)

Her name is Sephy. We got her when she as a little puppy and we love her so much.

My favorite food is any type of Korean food. I was born in Korea, so I love to eat any Korean food because I cannot eat those type of food in Oklahoma as often.

My hobby is to cook. Since I love Korean food, best way to get them is to cook them. I cook Korean food and my wife loves them.

During the extra time. I read books. Usually they are for fun, so most books are fantasy novels.

  1. Nice to meet you Fred! I think it is so cool that you love to cook, I do too. But my favorite is actually Mexican food, I can make some awesome guacamole. You're dog is precious, how did you choose her name? Props to you for being great at chemistry and for having such big dreams for your future. I wish you the best and hope you reach your dreams!

  2. Nice introduction! That's so cool that you're from Korea, I actually have a friend back home that is from Korea as well! It sounds like you're a great cook! I honestly wish I had more time to cook. Sadly, I am so busy during the week that I hardly ever have free time to make myself healthy meals. That's impressive that you are so good at chemistry, math and science are my worst subjects! It was nice to meet you and I look forward to reading the rest of your work for this class!

  3. Welcome to the class, Fred! I cannot change how your name displays in D2L, but outside D2L, you can definitely be Fred. And it is fun to meet another LotR fan! Those are some of my favorite books, and I like the movies too (although the Hobbit movies not so much since they are not really like the book). Tolkien drew on lots of traditional mythological material to create his own world, so maybe that will give you some ideas for a project you could do in this class! Or maybe a Storybook all about bears... but not as scary as the Revenant bear.

And Korean food is soooo good! I used to live in Berkeley and there were TWO fantastic Korean restaurants - one was on the south side of campus and one was on the north side! Result: no Berkeley student was ever far away from bibimbap, which is one of my favorites too, so I agree: yum! I wish that were what I was having for dinner tonight (instead of boring spaghetti). I hope you will enjoy the class!

  4. Hi, Fred! I think it is great that you have a passion for chemistry and have set some pretty neat short and long term goals! You seem like you know what you want in life and that is very respectable!
I haven't seen the Lord of the Rings or The Revenant yet! I should see it since it has been up for some awards lately.
Your dog Sephy is so cute! I absolutely love dogs. They are just the sweetest and make me so happy.
The picture of your Korean dish looks so tasty! It looks like something I would enjoy especially because of the egg on top.
Good luck with your spring semester!

  5. Hi,
First off I really like your blog background. Its unique and eye catching. Just out of curiosity why do you go by Fred? I have a friend from China and when he came to america he was sitting with his cousin at lunch and just came up with an english name. I was wondering if you had a similar story?

I have never had Korean food, but I would like to. I am in love with food and just recently had Indian for the first time. My goal is to start trying different cultural food.

  6. Hi Fred!
It is so nice to meet you and I liked learning a bit more about you! I took Chemistry my freshman year here and got an A but I can't say it's my favorite subject. But I'm glad that someone likes it! I bet you will benefit so many kids in your lifetime by being their professor! I liked hearing that you like to cook too! I bet your wife loves it! I have been attempting to cook and so far it's gone pretty well! I'm starting to love it actually! Well, it was nice to meet you and I am looking forward to reading more of your blogs!

  7. Hey Fred, my name is Austin! It's nice to meet you! I took Chem 1 and 2, and O. Chem 1 before I switched my major. I made A's in all of them. Chemistry is one of my favorite subjects! If you love Chemistry then you'll be a great teacher! I think loving what you do is what makes you great at it. I can honestly say that I have never tried Korean food! We don't have much of that here in Oklahoma, but I would love to try it some day!

  8. Hi Fred,
I am really glad that you like both the Lord of the Rings books AND movies. It's a popular movie, but I actually haven't met too many people who have also read the book (like me).
I think I actually recognize the type of food you posted in the picture. My dad made it once after a trip to Korea, and one of his friends from the trip even sent him some authentic Korean Bean paste to use.

  9. Hi Fred, it's nice to meet you! It's really great that you have a passion for chemistry and want to teach it. I've only taken up to ochem 2 and I like chemistry but I'd have to say that I'm not too passionate about it. I'm also Korean too but I was born in the states. It's really great that you can cook Korean food. I'm not very good at cooking so I just rely on my mom.

  10. Hey Fred! I think that’s great that you are studying chemistry as your major because it seems like a really interesting field to be involved in. I have always enjoyed chemistry, but I was never very good at it. Also I think it is awesome that you want to teach chemistry to high school students. That seems like a really rewarding way to use your passion.

  12. Hey Fred! I really enjoyed reading your intro. You seem like a very interesting person. Intro's are my favorite part of peoples blogs to read cause everyone is so different from one another which is awesome. Like you, I am a huge fan of Lord of the Rings and I also have a dog. He is a 3 year old golden retriever who is laying practically on top of my lap top right now as I am typing this haha. Getting a dog was a tough decision but its been one of the best decisions of my life as he has been so rewarding and been a great friend. Good luck with everything and hope you will be teaching chemistry in the future!

  13. Fred,
My fellow chemistry major, I have yet to take chem 4444; that is my last class next semester but I am looking forward to it. I have been doing research for about two years now and have a ton of experience with chemical analysis and organic synthesis because of it! I love korean food as well, though I have only had it on a couple different occasions. Your dog looks precious as well; I would love a dog like that once I am a very successful chemist and have a big home for him! Good luck on all your future endeavors!

  14. That's awesome that you want to be a chemistry professor! I also think teaching would be a great career. Also, since I've been in school all my life, teaching seems really natural since I'm accustomed to the system and culture of schools, especially college. I admire you for liking chemistry so much, it's definitely a hard subject that many struggle with!

  15. Hey Fred!
I really enjoyed reading your introduction. I am visiting your blog from the Epics of India class. Wow, Chemistry is tough. I’ve had the pleasure of taking a few courses over the last couple of years. I am a pre-dental student. That’s great you want to pursue a career teaching.

Thanks for sharing your photos. I may have to try Korean food. It looks pretty good! Have a great rest of the semester.

  16. Hi Fred! It's nice to meet you! Sephy is a very cute dog--how old is she now? I thought it was great that your favorite class last semester was also the most challenging; that's happening to me this semester! It sounds like you're really interested in your major, which is awesome too. Also The Lord of the Rings is one of my favorite books and movies, too, and I read fantasy for fun in my spare time, but I've never seen The Revenant. Maybe I'll have to check it out!

  17. Hey Fred! It is great to meet you! That is so neat that you want to be a chemistry professor. If you are passionate about it, it will be such a fulfilling career where you will really be able to talk about something that you love every day!. I also think I would have really enjoyed being a professor, I just did not choose the right degree path. I hope your finals go okay!
